Iraq lies in ancient Mesopotamia between the Tigris and the Euphrates, where some of the first cities in history were built. The ruins of Babylon and Ur, the marshes of the south and the holy Shia cities of Najaf and Karbala draw pilgrims and travellers.
Baghdad has old souqs and the Abbasid palace, and the Kurdistan region in the north, with Erbil and its ancient citadel, is easier to visit.
