The United Arab Emirates are a federation of seven emirates on the Persian Gulf, where desert and coastline meet some of the most ambitious cities in the world. Dubai has the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on earth, vast malls, the old creek with its souks and beaches lined with resorts.
Abu Dhabi, the capital, is home to the white Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Desert safaris lead into the dunes, and the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah offer a cooler escape. Winter is the pleasant season.
