Bahrain is a small island kingdom in the Persian Gulf, linked to Saudi Arabia by a long causeway. Manama, the capital, combines modern towers with the busy Bab Al Bahrain souq and the Al Fateh Grand Mosque. The Qal'at al-Bahrain fort, listed by UNESCO, stands on a mound built up over four thousand years of settlement, and the pearling path of Muharraq recalls the days of pearl diving.
The desert holds ancient burial mounds and the lonely Tree of Life. The Bahrain International Circuit hosts a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
