Description
Jebel Shams (جبل شمس), meaning “Mountain of the Sun”, is Oman’s highest mountain at around 3,009 metres and a spectacular natural destination in the Hajar Mountains. The region is defined by the deeply carved Wadi Nakhar, known as the “Grand Canyon of Oman”, along with dramatic cliffs, remote mountain villages and sweeping viewpoints. The popular Balcony Walk leads from Al Khitaym along the canyon wall to the abandoned settlement of Sab Bani Khamis, once home to mountain farming communities. While the military-controlled northern summit is not freely accessible, the southern summit can be reached by hiking trail. Clear mountain air, dramatic scenery and minimal light pollution make Jebel Shams a memorable destination for hikers, nature lovers and stargazers.
