Description
Nizwa (نزوى) served as Oman’s capital in the 6th and 7th centuries and remains the historic heart of the country’s interior. The city is known for its imposing Nizwa Fort, with its massive 17th-century round tower, its traditional souq filled with silver jewelry and handcrafted khanjars, and its lively Friday livestock market. Once an important center of Ibadhi Islam and Islamic scholarship, Nizwa holds a special place in Oman’s cultural heritage. Date-palm oases and traditional aflaj irrigation systems surround the city, reflecting its longstanding agricultural traditions. With its blend of history, craftsmanship, commerce, and Omani traditions, Nizwa remains one of the country’s most important cultural centers.
