Travel to Romania
Romania combines Carpathian mountains, broad river plains and a Black Sea coast with towns shaped by different cultural traditions. Bucharest contrasts grand boulevards and the vast Palace of Parliament with historic streets, museums and contemporary cafés. Regional journeys move between fortified churches, castles, painted monasteries and landscapes that extend far beyond familiar Transylvanian imagery.
Brașov, Sibiu and Sighișoara preserve different aspects of Transylvania’s urban and Saxon heritage. Bran combines medieval castle history with later Dracula associations. Sinaia adds Peleș Castle and a mountain setting, while Hunedoara has the imposing Corvin Castle. Fortified church villages broaden the region’s cultural landscape beyond its principal towns.
Cluj-Napoca brings university life and historic squares, while Timișoara and Oradea add western architectural traditions and public spaces. In the northeast, Iași is a major cultural city. Bucovina’s painted monasteries and Maramureș’s wooden churches, craft traditions and rural settlements offer contrasting forms of religious and vernacular heritage. Individual monuments have their own visiting arrangements.
The Transfăgărășan crosses high mountain terrain, but its upper road is seasonal and can close with snow or adverse weather. Walks in the Carpathians also require suitable conditions and local route planning. To the east, the Danube Delta protects channels, reed beds and bird habitats best explored within current permit and conservation rules. Constanța connects urban maritime heritage with the Black Sea shore.
Soups, sarmale, polenta, cheeses and local wines vary between regional kitchens. Spring and autumn often suit cities and heritage routes, while summer brings more mountain access, coastal activity and demand for delta boats. Winter conditions differ sharply by elevation. Allow time for long distances and check road openings, park access, weather and protected-area arrangements before combining regions.

Climate and best time to travel
Romania has continental seasons, with hot lowland summers, cold winters and cooler mountain elevations. Spring and autumn often suit towns and cultural routes. Summer generally opens more highland options, while the Black Sea coast is busiest in warmer months. Delta trips depend on water levels, weather, permits and wildlife rules. The high Transfăgărășan section is seasonal and may close in poor weather. Mountain conditions can change quickly. Month chips show typical planning windows rather than guaranteed road, boat or site access.
