Description
Sinaia grew up around a monastery in the Prahova valley and became the summer capital when Carol I built Peles Castle here in the eighteen seventies, a neo-renaissance palace of a hundred and sixty rooms with carved walnut interiors, a retractable glass roof and one of the first buildings in Europe with central heating and electricity throughout. It draws close to a million visitors a year. Behind it the Bucegi massif rises to two thousand five hundred metres, reached by cable car, and the town is a working ski resort in winter.
