Description
Bucovina in the northeast holds the painted monasteries, a group of sixteenth century churches whose exterior walls are covered edge to edge in frescoes that have survived five hundred Carpathian winters outdoors. Eight of them are on the UNESCO list. Voronet is the famous one, its north wall a blue so particular that the pigment is named after it, and the Last Judgement across the west front is the piece people stand in front of longest. The countryside between them is small farms, haystacks and horse carts, and it still works that way rather than as a display.
