Description
The Danube Delta (Delta Dunării) is the second largest river delta in Europe and the best preserved, a UNESCO biosphere reserve of reed islands, willow forest and shifting channels where the river finally breaks into three arms and reaches the Black Sea. More than three hundred bird species use it and the pelican colonies here are the largest outside Africa. There are almost no roads. Everything moves by boat from Tulcea, the villages are Lipovan Russian old believers who came here fleeing the eighteenth century church reforms, and the fish soup is the reason many Romanians come at all.
