Description
Timisoara (Timișoara) is the largest city of the Banat, close enough to Serbia and Hungary that it has always been the most mixed place in Romania, and it was where the revolution started in December 1989 when a crowd refused to let the police remove a Hungarian pastor from his flat. It was the first European city lit by electric street lamps in 1884. Three baroque squares of restored pastel facades sit within a few minutes of each other, and the year as European Capital of Culture in 2023 finished most of the restoration.
