Description
Sibiu was the main city of the Transylvanian Saxons, Germans invited east in the twelfth century who built the fortified towns and churches that define the region, and it kept a German-speaking mayor long after almost all of them had emigrated. Three linked squares of gabled houses sit above a lower town of cobbled lanes joined by the Liars' Bridge, and the attic vents cut into the roofs give the buildings the heavy-lidded look that gets called “the eyes of Sibiu”. It was European Capital of Culture in 2007 and the restoration dates from then.
