Hunedoara, Romania

Hunedoara

Romania · Transylvania · 250 m

Description

Corvin Castle at Hunedoara is the largest gothic castle in southeastern Europe and the one that actually looks the part, a mass of red-tiled turrets and buttresses on a rock above a stream, reached by a long wooden bridge on stone piers. John Hunyadi rebuilt it in the fourteen forties and its knights' hall and chapel are the best surviving gothic interiors in Romania. The town around it is a declining steelworks settlement and the contrast is stark, which is part of why the castle photographs the way it does.
