Liwa Oasis, United Arab Emirates

Liwa Oasis

United Arab Emirates · Abu Dhabi · 100 m

Description

Liwa Oasis (ليوا) lies on the northern edge of the Rub' al Khali, the “Empty Quarter”, forming a green lifeline amid the world’s largest continuous sand desert. Located in the south of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, this crescent-shaped oasis region is characterized by small settlements, date palm groves, and towering dunes and is the historic homeland of the Bani Yas, the tribal confederation from which the ruling families of Abu Dhabi and Dubai emerged. One of its most striking landmarks is Tal Moreeb, a dune rising more than 300 meters and renowned for its exceptionally steep slope, desert driving, and motorsport events. Liwa combines centuries-old oasis culture with the immense landscapes of the Rub' al Khali, offering vast dunes, profound silence, and dark desert skies in one of the Arabian Peninsula’s most impressive wilderness settings.
