Short description of Babylon
Babylon (بابل) was the capital of Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar and is the most famous archaeological site in Iraq, listed by UNESCO. What stands today is a mixture of excavated foundations and walls rebuilt in the twentieth century on the ancient courses, so the scale of the processional way and the palaces can be walked. A reconstruction of the Ishtar Gate marks the entrance, its original panels now in Berlin, and the basalt Lion of Babylon rests nearby. A Greek theatre from the time of Alexander lies at the edge of the site, and the ziggurat of Borsippa rises across the fields.
