Short description of Lalish
Lalish (لالش) is the holiest place of the Yazidi faith, a village of conical fluted spires in a wooded valley north of Mosul. The shrine of Sheikh Adi stands at its centre above a spring, and every Yazidi is expected to make the pilgrimage at least once. Visitors enter barefoot from the threshold of the main gate and step over, never on, the doorsills. Inside are rooms of clay oil jars, knotted silk cloths tied for wishes and the sacred springs of Zamzam and Kaniya Sipi. The valley is quiet and green, and the autumn festival fills it with families for a week.
