Short description of Mesopotamian Marshes
The Mesopotamian Marshes (الأهوار) are the wetlands where the Tigris and Euphrates spread out before the Gulf, and the largest such system in western Asia. The Marsh Arabs live here on artificial reed islands, moving by narrow mashuf canoe between channels cut through walls of qasab reed. Their guest houses are mudhifs, long halls built of bundled reed without a single nail, and water buffalo are driven into the water every morning. The marshes were drained and have been reflooded, and UNESCO lists them together with the Sumerian cities at their edge. Chibayish is the usual base for a boat trip.
