Short description of Erbil
Erbil (هەولێر) is the capital of the Kurdistan Region and one of the longest continuously inhabited places on earth. Its citadel sits on a mound of its own debris some thirty metres above the modern city and is listed by UNESCO. Below the walls the Qaysari bazaar sells tea, tobacco and carpets around the fountain square of Shar Park, where families gather until late. The Mudhafaria minaret survives from the Atabeg period, and modern parks, malls and a Christian quarter at Ankawa spread outwards. Mountain valleys with waterfalls and the cable car at Korek lie within a couple of hours.
