Short description of Ur
Ur (أور) was a Sumerian city state and one of the oldest urban places in the world. Its ziggurat to the moon god Nanna is the best preserved in Mesopotamia, a stepped platform of mud brick with a monumental stairway that can still be climbed. Around it lie the royal cemetery, where the treasures now in London and Philadelphia were found, and streets of houses from the era of Abraham, whose traditional birthplace is marked here. The site sits in flat desert near Nasiriyah. The marshes of southern Iraq, listed by UNESCO, begin a short drive to the east.
