Short description of Hawar Islands
The Hawar group is sixteen low islands off the southeast, closer to the Qatari shore than to Bahrain and awarded to Bahrain by the court at The Hague after a long argument over them. They are a protected area and a wetland of international standing, held for the birds rather than for people. The largest colony of Socotra cormorants anywhere breeds here, and the surrounding shallows carry one of the biggest remaining dugong populations. Access is the resort launch from the pavilion at Durrat Al Bahrain and nothing else, and the timings force a night on the island.
