Short description of Muharraq
Muharraq was the capital before Manama took the title and it kept the old town, a grid of lanes and merchant houses on its own island across the causeway. The Pearling Path threads through it as a lit walking route linking seventeen restored buildings, a stretch of the market and the fort at Bu Maher where the divers put out from, and that route is what UNESCO inscribed rather than any single monument. Visitors expecting one site are regularly disappointed. The airport is here, the souq fills after dark, and Arad Fort stands lit across the water.
