Taiwan is a mountainous island off the southeast coast of mainland China, known for its food, its temples and its friendly, easy-going cities. Taipei has the landmark tower of Taipei 101, the treasures of the National Palace Museum and famous night markets.

The marble cliffs of Taroko Gorge, the high peaks and tea plantations of Alishan and the calm waters of Sun Moon Lake are the natural highlights. Tainan, the old capital, is full of temples and snack stalls, and hot springs are found across the island. A high-speed railway runs down the west coast.
