Tamsui (淡水), also written Danshui, sits where the Tamsui River meets the sea at the northern end of Taipei's metro line, which makes it the capital's standard half-day escape. Its layered colonial past is unusually visible. Fort San Domingo was raised by the Spanish, rebuilt by the Dutch in 1644 and later leased as the British consulate, and the red-brick consular residence still stands beside it in its garden.
