Description
Kaohsiung (高雄) is Taiwan's southern metropolis and its largest port, and it has spent two decades turning industrial waterfront into public space. The Pier-2 Art Center is the clearest example, a run of former dock warehouses now holding galleries, studios and a cycle path along the water. Lotus Pond north of the centre is ringed by temples, of which the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are the best known. Visitors enter through the dragon's throat and leave through the tiger's mouth. A short ferry crosses to Cijin, a sandbar island of seafood restaurants, a black-sand beach and an old lighthouse. Formosa Boulevard metro station is worth a stop for the Dome of Light, one of the largest stained-glass works anywhere. Kaohsiung has a real dry season from November to March, while August alone brings over four hundred millimetres of rain.
