Kaohsiung (高雄) is Taiwan's southern metropolis and its largest port, and it has spent two decades turning industrial waterfront into public space. The Pier-2 Art Center is the clearest example, a run of former dock warehouses now holding galleries, studios and a cycle path along the water. Lotus Pond north of the centre is ringed by temples, of which the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are the best known. Visitors enter through the dragon's throat and leave through the tiger's mouth.
