Kenting, Taiwan

Kenting

Taiwan · Pingtung · 20 m

Description

Kenting (墾丁) occupies the tip of the Hengchun Peninsula at Taiwan's southern end and is the country's only genuinely tropical resort area. Kenting National Park was the first national park in Taiwan and covers both land and sea, with uplifted coral terraces, monsoon forest and the reefs offshore. Eluanbi lighthouse stands at the southernmost point, unusual for having been built fortified with gun ports against attack. The beaches run from the wide sand at Baishawan to the small sheltered bays at Nanwan, and the strip along Kenting Street turns into a night market and bar row after dark. Behind the coast, Longpan Park's grassland ends abruptly at a limestone cliff above the sea. Winter here is warm and dry and is the better season, though the downhill wind off the peninsula can blow hard for a day or two.
