Kyrgyzstan is a small, mountainous country in Central Asia, where more than nine tenths of the land lies above a thousand metres. The Tian Shan and Pamir ranges hold alpine lakes such as Issyk-Kul, one of the largest mountain lakes in the world, and Song-Kul, where herders spend the summer in yurts.
Trekking, horse riding and nights with nomadic families are the main draws, and the valleys of Ala-Archa and Jeti-Ögüz lie close to the towns. Bishkek, the capital, is green and relaxed. The country is one of the easiest to visit in the region.
