Description
Keelung (基隆) is Taiwan's northern port, a working harbour city wrapped around a deep inlet where container cranes and cruise ships tie up within sight of the old town. Its reason to visit is Miaokou, a night market that runs on both sides of a temple forecourt under a continuous line of yellow lanterns and is generally rated among the best food streets in the country. The harbour edge at Zhengbin has been repainted in blocks of flat colour that now draw as many photographers as the fishing boats. Out on the headland, Heping Island Geopark has its own wave-eroded rock platforms and tidal pools. Keelung takes the full force of the winter northeast monsoon, and October is statistically its wettest month, so it rewards a dry day.
