Travel to Tajikistan
Tajikistan is the most mountainous country of Central Asia, with the Pamirs rising to more than seven thousand metres in the east. The Pamir Highway, one of the highest roads in the world, crosses bare plateaus and passes to the Wakhan Valley on the Afghan border.
The Fann Mountains, near the old Silk Road town of Penjikent, hold turquoise lakes and trekking routes. Dushanbe, the capital, is a calm city of wide avenues and teahouses. A special permit is required for the Gorno-Badakhshan region, and roads in the mountains are rough and slow.
