Description
Lukang (鹿港) was the second city of Taiwan in the eighteenth century, a port trading rice and timber with Fujian until its harbour silted up. The decline preserved it. The old street is a continuous run of Qing-era brick shophouses, and the lanes behind it were built deliberately crooked to break the sea wind, which is how Nine Turns Lane got its name. Lukang Tianhou Temple is one of the most important Mazu temples in Taiwan and holds a statue brought from the founding shrine on Meizhou. Longshan Temple, quieter and larger, is generally reckoned the finest piece of Qing temple architecture on the island. The town still supports workshops making tin ware, lanterns and folding fans by hand, and its oyster omelettes and shrimp balls are a reason people come at all.
