Taichung, Taiwan

Taichung

Taiwan · 80 m

Description

Taichung (臺中) is Taiwan's second-largest city and the most relaxed of the three big ones, with a mild climate and a drier record than either Taipei or the south. Its landmark is the National Taichung Theater by Toyo Ito, a concrete building with no straight interior walls, built from a lattice of curved surfaces. Fengjia is the largest night market in the country by footfall, wrapped around a university campus. Rainbow Village on the edge of town is a handful of veterans' houses painted over every surface by a single resident, which is what stopped them being demolished. Out at the coast the Gaomei Wetlands are a sheet of tidal flat crossed by a boardwalk, best at sunset behind the wind turbines. Taichung is also the base for the mountain roads up to Cingjing and Hehuanshan.
