Taitung, Taiwan

Taitung

Taiwan · 10 m

Description

Taitung (臺東) is the quietest of Taiwan's cities, spread along the southeast coast between the Pacific and the East Rift Valley. Its coastline is the least built of the island's. Sanxiantai reaches three rocky islets by an eight-arched footbridge that has become the county's emblem, and Xiaoyeliu has the same eroded sandstone as Yehliu with almost none of the crowd. Inland the rift valley is rice country, and the tree-lined lane through the paddies at Chishang known as “Brown Boulevard” is photographed as much as any temple. Taitung is the strongest surviving centre of Amis and Puyuma culture, documented at the Beinan site and the National Museum of Prehistory. The hot-air balloon festival above the Luye Highlands fills the town through high summer, and ferries and light aircraft leave from here for Green Island.
