Description
Yehliu (野柳) is a narrow cape of sandstone on Taiwan's north coast where wind and salt water have eaten the rock into a field of freestanding shapes. The best known is the Queen's Head, a mushroom rock whose neck has thinned so far that its collapse is now openly counted down in years. Around it stand candlestick rocks, honeycomb weathering, ginger rocks and a stone the guides call the Fairy's Shoe, all laid out along a boardwalk of a kilometre or so. The formations sit on a wave-cut platform that is fully exposed, with no shade and a constant onshore wind. It is a short trip from Taipei and is usually combined with the fishing harbour next door or with Jiufen inland.
