Description
Jiaoxi (礁溪) is a hot-spring town on the Yilan plain, half an hour from Taipei through the mountains by expressway tunnel. Its water is unusual for Taiwan in being a lowland carbonate spring that is clear, odourless and mild enough to drink and to cook with, and the town has built free public foot baths into its streets rather than hiding the springs in resorts. Behind the town the Wufengqi Waterfall falls in three tiers up a short forested trail, and the Linmei Shipan Trail loops through a mossy gorge planted with tree ferns. Yilan county around it is intensively rural, with rice fields running to the coast at Waiao and Dali. This is the wettest corner of Taiwan, with rain on most days of most months and October the worst of them.
