Description
Penghu (澎湖) is an archipelago of about ninety low islands in the Taiwan Strait, only a handful of them inhabited. The rock is basalt, and where the sea has cut into it the columnar jointing stands exposed in walls of hexagonal pillars at Tongpan and Daguoye. Between the islands, generations of fishermen built stone weirs on the tidal flats to trap fish, and the double heart-shaped one at Qimei has become the emblem of the whole county. Magong is the only town, with an old street and a Tianhou temple that claims to be the oldest in Taiwan. The beaches are white coral sand and the wind is relentless, which has made Penghu a serious windsurfing destination. That same wind grounds flights and ferries from about October to March, so the season is short and centres on the fireworks festival in spring.
