Travel to French Guiana
French Guiana is a French overseas territory on South America's northeastern coast, part of the European Union and euro area rather than an independent country. Cayenne, the administrative capital, combines Creole architecture, markets and carnival traditions with the daily life of a diverse population.
Kourou's Guiana Space Centre connects the region with European spaceflight, with visits requiring advance booking and operational clearance. Offshore, Île Royale and Île Saint-Joseph preserve buildings from the penal-colony system on the Îles du Salut. Île du Diable is not open to visitors. Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni's Camp de la Transportation offers another perspective on this history beside the river bordering Suriname.
The coastal zone includes Rémire-Montjoly's beaches, Kaw's wetlands and the savannas and marshes around Sinnamary. Iracoubo adds a church with an extensively painted interior, while Awala-Yalimapo is associated with Kali'na culture and sea-turtle nesting beaches. Leatherbacks and other turtles come ashore seasonally, but sightings are never guaranteed and observation must follow local protection rules.
Most of the territory is rainforest, with the Guiana Amazonian Park protecting extensive southern landscapes rather than the entire forest. Saül has forest walking trails, while Maripasoula and Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock introduce different river regions. Indigenous and Maroon communities have distinct traditions and make their own decisions about receiving visitors. Arrange local guidance and community consent, and check protected-area rules and any required access authorisations.
Cacao's Hmong market and food stalls complement Creole dishes such as bouillon d'awara, smoked chicken and fish preparations. Rainfall, river levels and humid heat shape excursions and travel times. Interior journeys may require flights or riverboats rather than roads, and availability must be confirmed beforehand. Plan suitable equipment, mosquito protection and current health guidance, allowing for weather-related changes. Wildlife encounters, rocket launches and access to individual sites are not guaranteed.
