Description
Saint-Georges faces the Brazilian town of Oiapoque across the river that gives it its name, and since March 2017 a cable-stayed bridge has joined the two. That bridge is the only land crossing French Guiana has and the first ever opened between France and Brazil, so a car can now be driven from Cayenne to Macapá. The town of about five thousand was isolated until the road from Régina was surfaced in 2004. Around five hundred Palikur live in the commune, including the stilt village of Trois-Palétuviers. Pirogues still cross more often than cars do. Gold was found on the Camopi in 1885 and brought the first rush here.
