Description
Rémire-Montjoly runs along the coast just east of Cayenne and holds the beaches the capital lacks, a series of bays of grey Amazon sand between wooded headlands. Leatherback turtles come ashore to lay here between March and July, on the same strip of beach that has houses behind it, and the nests are marked and watched. A marked trail climbs the Rorota hill through forest to two viewpoints over the coast. The ruins of the Loyola sugar plantation lie inland under the trees. The Loyola plantation was run by the Jesuits until their expulsion in 1763.
