Description
Saül is a village of about a hundred people at the geographic centre of French Guiana, founded by Antillean gold prospectors and now reached only by a forty-five minute flight from Cayenne. It is the trailhead for the Guiana Amazonian Park, the largest national park in the European Union, and forty-five kilometres of marked paths run out of the village into primary rainforest that has never been logged. The Monts La Fumée trail climbs to viewpoints out over the canopy. Botanists come for a flora recorded nowhere else in the department. The park it opens on covers more than thirty thousand square kilometres.
