Saül is a village of about a hundred people at the geographic centre of French Guiana, founded by Antillean gold prospectors and now reached only by a forty-five minute flight from Cayenne. It is the trailhead for the Guiana Amazonian Park, the largest national park in the European Union, and forty-five kilometres of marked paths run out of the village into primary rainforest that has never been logged.
