Short description of Karakul
Karakul is a salt lake filling an ancient meteorite crater on the roof of the Pamirs, so high that it stays frozen for more than half the year. The water reads as an unnatural blue against bare brown ridges with no vegetation anywhere around the shore. A small Kyrgyz village of mudbrick houses sits on the eastern side and takes in guests for the short summer. On a clear morning the white snow wall of Peak Lenin stands up beyond the northern shore. Nobody should sleep at this altitude on the first night of a Pamir journey.
