Short description of Khujand
Khujand is the northern city, older than anything else in the country and culturally closer to the Fergana valley than to the capital across the mountains. Its covered bazaar is among the largest in Central Asia, a long hall of fruit, nuts and cloth that fills every morning. Beside it a reconstructed citadel wall holds the regional museum and the Sheikh Muslihiddin complex keeps its mosque and mausoleum in use. The Syr Darya runs through the middle with a promenade along both banks. Independence was declared in the Soviet cultural palace on the southern outskirts.
