Short description of Panjakent
Panjakent sits in the Zarafshan valley a short drive from the Uzbek border, which makes it the busiest land entry in the country for travellers arriving from Samarkand. Above the modern town lie the excavated streets of a Sogdian city abandoned after the Arab conquest, once painted with murals that are now kept in museums far away. Older still is Sarazm on the plain below, a settlement of the fourth millennium and the earliest world heritage site here. Both reward a guide, since neither is interpreted well on the ground. The town is also the road to the seven lakes.
