Short description of Nurek
Nurek is the dam town an hour east of the capital, built in the Soviet years to house the workers who threw an earth wall across the Vakhsh gorge and held back a reservoir forty kilometres long. The water below is a startling milky turquoise against dry brown hills and the road along it gives one viewpoint after another. Tajik families come out at the weekend to swim and eat by the shore. The dam itself is a working installation and cannot be entered. A space tracking station sits on the ridge high above the lake.
