Short description of Hisor
Hisor is the fortress town west of the capital that every visitor is taken to on a spare afternoon, close enough to reach and return before dinner. Its gateway of twin round towers is the image on the banknote, though the stonework standing today is largely a modern rebuilding of what the Soviets found ruined. Behind it two madrasas face each other across the old approach and one holds the site museum. A mausoleum and the remains of a caravanserai complete the group. The valley around it is farmland with the Hisor range rising to the north.
