Short description of Wakhan Valley
The Wakhan is the corridor where the Panj separates Tajikistan from Afghanistan and the Hindu Kush stands up on the far bank in a wall of snow. Villages of Wakhi speakers line the Tajik side, farming irrigated terraces and taking travellers into their houses through the warm months. Ruined fortresses watch the valley from spurs above it, the finest of them at Yamchun with a hot spring on the slope behind. Buddhist remains at Vrang and rock carvings above Langar mark much older traffic. Photography of the far bank and the checkpoints is not permitted.
