Short description of Iskanderkul
Iskanderkul is a turquoise lake held in a bowl of the Fann Mountains, named for Alexander in a legend that says his horse drowned in it. The road in leaves the highway after the long tunnel under the Anzob pass and climbs a rough track to the shore. A short walk downstream the outflow drops over a cliff in a fall that locals call the Fann Niagara, loudest while the snow is still melting. Smaller Snake Lake lies in the meadows nearby. Tajik families fill the lakeside on summer weekends and the water stays cold even then.
