Short description of Tripoli
Tripoli (طرابلس) is the second city of Lebanon and holds the largest collection of Mamluk architecture outside Cairo. The citadel of Raymond de Saint-Gilles sits on the hill above a dense old town of madrasas, hammams and mosques, and the souks below are working markets for gold, soap and copper rather than souvenirs. The Khan al-Saboun still sells the olive oil soap the city has made for centuries, and the sweet shops are famous across the country. The harbour district of El Mina looks out to small islands, one of them a nature reserve for turtles and birds.
