Syria · Tartus Governorate
Short description of Tartus
Tartus (طرطوس) is the second port of Syria and the town the Crusaders called Tortosa, their last mainland foothold. Its cathedral of Our Lady is a fortified church of the twelfth century, plain and massive, now the town museum. The old quarter behind it grew inside the walls of the Templar fortress, so houses sit on medieval vaults and lanes follow the line of the ramparts. A corniche runs along the sea past fish restaurants and cafés. Ferries cross in twenty minutes to Arwad, the only inhabited island of Syria, a place of boatyards and seafood.
