Short description of Krak des Chevaliers
The Krak des Chevaliers (قلعة الحصن) is the most complete Crusader castle that survives anywhere, held by the Knights Hospitaller for well over a century above the pass between the coast and the Syrian interior. Two rings of wall enclose a vaulted hall, a chapel later used as a mosque, storerooms cut for a garrison of two thousand and a sloping stone glacis that carried the weight of the inner fortress. A dark ramp curves up inside the rock from the gate. The castle is listed by UNESCO, was damaged in the war and has been repaired, and the view runs to the Homs gap.
