Syria · Hama Governorate
Short description of Hama
Hama (حماة) is known for its norias, the wooden waterwheels that have lifted the Orontes into stone aqueducts for centuries. Seventeen survive, some over twenty metres across, and they groan audibly when the river runs high enough to turn them. Gardens and cafés line the banks between them, and the Azm Palace of the local governor stands nearby with its courtyards and museum. The Great Mosque was rebuilt after the destruction the city suffered in the late twentieth century. Apamea, the dead cities and the Crusader castles are all within an easy drive.
