Short description of Bcharré & the Cedars
Bcharré (بشري) stands on the rim of the Qadisha Valley, the gorge where Maronite monks cut monasteries into the cliffs and which UNESCO lists together with the cedar grove above it. The Cedars of God are a few hundred ancient trees, the last substantial stand of the forest that once covered these mountains and supplied the timber of Phoenician ships and Solomon's temple. Paths drop from the village into the valley past Qannoubine and Deir Mar Elisha. The painter and poet Khalil Gibran was born here, and his museum holds his paintings and his tomb. Lebanon's ski slopes begin above the trees.
