Short description of Anjar
Anjar (عنجر) is the only major Umayyad city in Lebanon and unlike anything else in the country, a walled rectangle laid out on a Roman grid with two colonnaded streets crossing at a tetrapylon. It was built in the eighth century, used for a few decades and then abandoned, so nothing later was built over it and the plan can be read whole. Arcades of the palace still stand two storeys high, and the stone mixes reused Roman blocks with Umayyad brick courses. The site is listed by UNESCO. The modern village beside it was founded by Armenian refugees and cooks their kitchen.
